Cathcart Playground Equipment Replacement Project

Recess and physical activity are extremely important in elementary school aged children. Allowing our children the ability to relax and release tension through physical activity enables classroom time to be used more constructively.

The Cathcart Parent Organization (CPO) believes that recess is an important time in our students’ lives. The current playground equipment was reviewed and it was decided that updates were needed. The CPO asked parent volunteers to come together to develop a scope of work, find a vendor, develop a budget and work with the vendor to design a new structure to meet student needs.
The parent volunteers contacted other schools in the district to learn about the playground equipment process. They put together a scope of work that incorporated the needs of the students and sent it to an approved district vendor. The vendor provided 2 designs, staying within the provided budget of $15,000.

The CPO thought that this would be a good opportunity (especially during this election year) to allow the children to vote on which design they would prefer to purchase. The design with the majority of votes will be purchased when the funds are raised. A portion of the funds raised during the 2007-2008 school year has been allocated to the playground equipment replacement project.
We look forward to working hard to raise additional funds during the upcoming year. The more funds we raise the faster we will be able to purchase the new equipment.

2/17/09 Update:

Congratulations Cathcart - we are SO close to our playground equipment replacement goa.

We raised approximately $8,000 from the fall fundraiser (Sally Foster and Otis Spunkmeyer) in which half of the money was allocated towards the playground equipment replacement project.  The other half is being used towards other CPO projects.

We have been given the "green light" to move forward on finalizing the equipment design and obtain approval by the school district.  We will also start working on the logistics of the old equipment removal and installation of the new equipment.

9/19/09 Update:

Congratulations Cathcart!  After 2 years and 3 fundraisers we reached our goal and the playground equipment was installed!  Thank you to all the parents and volunteers for their donations and hard work installing the equipment!

Check out the slideshow of the big installation!
